Milk and Honey
Score: 4/5 Bookmarks
I’ve had a yearning to read more poetry lately, and I remembered a friend had sent me a copy of Milk and Honey by Rupi Kaur which had been sitting on my shelf, neglected. I sat down last night intending to just dip into it (pun intended) but ended up devouring the entire thing. Once I had read one poem I found I just couldn’t stop!
This collection of poems is split into four chapters, each dealing with a different pain point. There are poems about loss, trauma, abuse, healing, love and femininity and a couple of my favorites are:
nothing is safer
than the sound of you
reading out loud to me
- the perfect date
how you love yourself is
how you teach others
to love you
you
are your own
soul mate
your art
is not about how many people
like your work
your art
is about
if your heart likes your work
if your soul likes your work
it’s about how honest
you are with yourself
and you
must never
trade honesty
for relatability
- to all you young poets
The book also contains lovely little illustrations on many of the pages. So it's not just a feast of words.
This is definitely worth reading…again, and again.
